Classic Yacht & Boats
Kits for classic yachts, launches and traditional small craft, built in timber and usually finished to show the wood rather than hide it. A natural choice if you enjoy planking and want a model where the finish itself is the reward.

Classic boat kits are about woodwork. Where a warship kit hides its planking under paint, a classic yacht or launch is usually finished bright, so the quality of your planking, sanding and varnishing is fully on show.
What the builds involve
A laser cut frame with first and second planking, the outer layer in walnut, mahogany or similar, followed by laid decking, coamings, cockpit joinery and fittings in brass and turned timber. Sailing subjects add masts, spars, standing and running rigging and cloth sails, with rigging plans supplied. Launches and runabouts substitute screens, seating, engine covers and deck hardware.
A good place to develop technique
Because the hull is left visible, these kits teach planking discipline faster than a painted subject, where filler hides a multitude of sins. Start with a small open boat if you have not planked before, then move up. Difficulty grades and parts counts are on each listing.
Finishing
A bright finished hull depends on the last stage as much as the first. Fine abrasives, a good varnish or oil, and patience between coats matter more than any single tool. See paints, varnishes and finishes, and clamps and building tools for the holding aids that keep a hull straight while it is planked.

Common questions
Are yacht kits easier than tall ship kits?
Usually, because there is far less rigging. The trade off is that the planking and varnish work is visible and must be neat.
Can these be sailed?
These are display kits. For boats built to go on the water, see RC boats.
What finish should I use on a bright hull?
A clear varnish or oil built up in thin coats, sanded lightly between them. Avoid a single heavy coat, which fills the plank lines you have just created.
