About the Shamrock
The Shamrock was an Irish racing yacht built in 1898 by Scottish boat builders. She was an unsuccessful challenger in the 10th America’s Cup in 1899 against the United States. The name is derived from the Irish seamróg, which means “young clover”, a known as the symbol of Ireland. The first race of the Shamrock I against the Welsh Britannia was a great success. However, the second race led to her withdrawal from the competition due to the yacht’s asymmetrical measurements. She was the only classic wooden J-Class sail ever built for the America’s Cup. The Shamrock V has never been out of service and has been rebuilt by some of the world’s greatest sailors and navigators.
