Plank Bending Tools

Home > Tools and Accessories > Plank Bending Tools

Tools for shaping planking strip to follow a hull, including plank benders, crimping tools and formers. These handle the one job in wooden ship modelling that cannot be forced with clamps alone.

Strip timber will not follow a hull shape without help. Around the bow and at the stern, planks need to bend edgeways as well as lengthways, and attempting it dry will crack the strip or lift it away from the bulkheads once the glue has dried.

Three ways to bend a plank

  • Electric plank benders apply heat directly to soften and set the timber into shape. The most controllable method and the one to choose for hardwood second planking.
  • Crimping and nipping tools work the inner face of the strip so it curves without splitting. Effective on thin lime first planking.
  • Formers and jigs hold a soaked or heated plank while it dries into shape.

Which you need

It depends on the kit. Thicker strip, tight bows and hardwood outer planking need heat. Thin first planking will often bend with water and a crimping tool. If you are working through a tall ship kit, you will use both before the hull is closed.

Method

Work one plank at a time, offer it up to the hull as you go, and fix it only when it sits against the bulkheads without pressure. A plank that has to be forced into place will pull the frame out of true. Plank clamps hold it there while the glue cures.

Common questions

Can I bend planks without a tool?

You can soak and pin them, but the results are inconsistent and slower. A bender pays for itself on the first hull.

Will heat mark the timber?

Not at the right setting and with the plank moving. Practise on an offcut before working on visible outer planking.
