Barges, Trawlers & Tug Boats
Wooden kits for working boats, including harbour and ocean tugs, trawlers, barges and general workboats. Strong subjects for a first or second wooden build, with plenty of deck detail and no complex square rig to master. Many are designed to take radio control.

Working boat kits are a sensible route into wooden modelling. The hulls are shorter and beamier than a sailing ship, which makes planking more forgiving, and the interest comes from deck detail rather than weeks of rigging.
What you build
A laser cut ply frame with strip planking, then a wheelhouse and deckhouses, masts and derricks, winches, gallows, net drums, bollards, fenders and railings in brass, cast metal or turned wood. Many kits supply pre-shaped superstructure components, which keeps the build moving and makes them a good second project.
Static or radio controlled
Tugs and trawlers are the most commonly converted subjects in the hobby, because the hull volume and the slow, purposeful way they move on the water suit scale running. Several kits here are built to allow for a motor, shaft and rudder from the start. Where that applies it is noted on the listing, and the motor, electronics and battery are bought separately. See RC compatible models for the kits designed for conversion, and RC boats for boats that arrive ready to run.
What you will need alongside the kit
Plank clamps, a plank bender, a modelling knife, abrasives, wood glue and paint. If you are starting from nothing, a multi tool set covers most of it.
If you would rather not build
The same vessel types are available finished in our ready made tug, trawler and barge models, and a model of one specific named boat can be commissioned through bespoke working boat models.
Common questions
Are tug kits good for beginners?
Generally yes, at the lower difficulty grades. The hull is short and the rig is minimal, so you learn planking without committing to rigging.
Can any of these kits be converted to RC later?
Only the ones designed for it. Converting a static kit after the event usually means cutting into a finished hull, which rarely ends well. Check the listing before you start.
What scale are working boat kits?
Commonly larger than sailing ship kits, because the real boats are small. That is why the deck detail on a tug model reads so clearly.
