About the Danmark

The Danmark succeeded the København. The latter was a five-masted barque, which mysteriously disappeared at sea in 1928. The Denmark was originally built to accommodate a crew of 120, but this number was later reduced to 80 due to an incident. She was built at the Nakskov Lolland shipyard, to train officers for the Danish Merchant Navy, hence she was intended to serve as a training ship. In 1939, she participated in the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. Soon after this, during the outbreak of conflict, at the beginning of World War II, she remained in American waters to avoid possible capture by the Germans. She was then docked in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was maintained with the help of the Danish-American community. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the captain, KL. Hansen, offered the ship to the US government as a training vessel. To this day, training trips continue to be offered to people of all nationalities interested in learning the basics of seamanship on a tall ship.
