About the APL

APL, American President Lines Ltd, is a shipping company. They carry containers down to Singapore. They have a subsidiary of the French shipping company CMA CGM which operates a fleet of all-container vessels. After the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, the west coast of the United States was extended to San Diego. Mail delivery was allowed to be carried by ship from the US East Coast to the Pacific Coast via the Isthmus of Panama. There were two steamship routes in operation: New York City – Colombia, and Panama City – Oregon. The company was to carry the mail from Panama to the West Coast. In 1848, the Pacific Mail’s first steamer, the SS California, left New York to operate between Panama City and the West Coast, rounding Cape Horn to San Francisco. Coincidentally, the California Gold Rush began that year.

About the Model APL Ship

This wooden model ship is handcrafted with a remarkable level of craftsmanship. Using the traditional plank on frame construction technique, guaranteeing the highest level of quality. Every step of the construction process is carefully checked and takes several weeks. The hulls and decks are built exclusively from carefully selected hardwoods. The model boat is sanded and varnished in several layers to create a smooth finish. The details are reproduced with hand-sewn leather & fabric upholstery, and polished brass & metal finishes. The team of master craftsmen use the skills and expertise developed over many years to ensure that this model is identical to the original. The model is mounted on a solid wooden base and includes a brass plate.
