About the American Flyer

Also known as the USNS Flyer, the American Flyer was a US Navy C2-S-B1 cargo ship. She was built for the Maritime Commission (MC). The ship was named Water Witch and was later purchased in 1946 by United States Lines. They renamed her American Flyer. Under Navy orders, the American Flyer carried out deep water missions for the installation of an acoustic surveillance system.

The ship was completed in 1945 and commissioned under a Maritime Commission agreement with the McCormick Steamship Company. The ship was acquired by the US Navy under a permanent transfer and commissioned in 1965. The Flyer was converted to naval service as a miscellaneous auxiliary vessel, bathymetric survey vessel, to conduct deep water surveys for the Caesar project, the unclassified cover name for the installation of the acoustic monitoring system.

Through extensive research and careful planning, the American Flyer model is built by our experienced craftsmen using the traditional technique of plank-on-frame construction. This technique requires several hundred hours to complete. The models are constructed out of locally-sourced wood and are then varnished before being hand painted, for additional protection. All models are ready to be displayed and are supplied with a wooden base and a brass name plate. With a striking red waterline, this model will make an exquisite addition to any space.
