Algoma Central Marine, a subsidiary of Algoma Central Corp, operates a fleet of automatic unloading vessels on the Great Lakes. In 2000, Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd. and Algoma Central formed a partnership to co-ordinate the movement of cargo along the St. Lawrence Seaway. After a buyout, the company was re-named Algoma Central Marine. The entire fleet was also renamed.
The company launched the construction of a series of new bulk carriers. They will be named after the main ship, the Algoma Equinox. The revamped fleet has incorporated technical and technological improvements to reduce fuel consumption, and also to create a safer workplace and reduce emissions and other environmental impacts.
