The most celebrated American ship, the USS Constitution, was launched in 1797 and was one of the six original frigates authorized for construction according to the 1794 Naval Act. The wooden-hulled, three-masted frigate is the world’s oldest commissioned naval vessel. The name of the ship is derived from the United States Constitution and was named by George Washington, the first president himself. The ship was built in Edmund Hartt’s shipyard in Boston.
The main duties of USS Constitution were to protect American merchant ships against French fleets and to fight Barbary pirates. She gained the biggest fame during the war against Great Britain in 1812 when she managed to capture several merchant ships and defeated five British warships. The fame and the nickname earned after defeating HMS Guerriere, ‘Old Ironsides’, helped her from not being scrapped after the war. After operating in the Mediterranean and Africa, she was used as a training ship during the American Civil War. After her unique history, she was designated as a museum ship in 1907 and nowadays she resides in Boston.
