Readymade wooden replica of Lulworth yacht
Lulworth wooden yacht model represents our Standard range at Premier Ship Models. For the ones who do not require Custom made models, this model is one of the more affordable ones. The model ship is made of wood and contains some design features of the original Lulworth sailing yacht.
The Lulworth yacht was built in 1920 in Southampton, England. The name of the yacht, Lulworth, is derived from a Lulworth Castle which belonged to Herbert Weld, a grandson of a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. It was built by White Brothers’ Yard for Richard Lee who wanted to own a racing yacht able to compete in the Big Class league, the best yachting league in Europe.
Usually, masts of these kinds of yachts were made of wood, however shortages of premium spruce after World War 1 caused that the lower mast had to be made of steel which proved to be significant handicap compared to other major competitors like Shamrock or Westward. This handicap was solved later when Charles Ernest Nicholson, a naval architect, adjusted the keel balance and exchanged the steel construction of the lower mast for wood.
These design changes had significant effect on the accomplishments in the Big Class category, resulting in 59 first places in 258 races between 1920 and 1930. Arrival of new J-Class yachts in 1930 meant that the gaff-rigged racing yachts like Lulworth could not compete anymore in this category which meant the sad retirement for this yacht. Richard Lucas saved Lulworth from being scrapped in 1947 and it became a houseboat in the River Hamble.
A major restoration started in 2002 in Italy, when the original plans were replicated containing most of the original furnishings and steel frames. The yacht was relaunched in 2006, and subsequently won Boat International Magazine’s World Superyacht Awards 2007.
