Handcrafted, scratch built and ready made Batavia Model Ship

Batavia classic wooden ship model by Premier Ship Models is fully handcrafted with attention to the smallest detail. This model ship from the Premier Range is one of the two ship models offered by Premier Ship Models and has the same level of detail as the smaller wooden model of a ship.

The Batavia scale model is a perfect replica of the Batavia sailing ship built in 1600s and contains all the design features of the original vessel. This classic sailing ship model is one of the many representing the quality and expertise of model making of Premier Ship Models. Made from high quality materials and precise ship modelling craftsmanship, this and other ship models are considered as work of art and of museum quality. The ship model is painted and handcrafted by skilled artisans according to original ship plans and drawings.

Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company built in Amsterdam in 1628 armed with 24 cast-iron cannons and a number of bronze guns. This Amsterdam ship firstly departed on 27th October 1628 from Texel commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to obtain spices. The captain was Adriaen Jacobsz, but the overall commander was Fleet President Francisco Pelsaert.

She was accompanied by seven other ships of various sizes. These included the Buren (a warship), the Dordrecht, Galiasse and s'-Gravenhage (Retour ships), the Assendelft and the Sardaam (storeships) and a small yacht the Kleine David. This ship is known mainly for its wreckage which occurred on 4th of June in 1629 near Beacon Island, close to the Western Australian coast.

Of the 322 aboard, most of the passengers and crew managed to get ashore, although 40 people drowned and the history of Batavia ship is known also for the tragic events happened to survivors when due to insufficient supplies of fresh water and food, the survivors of the Batavia shipwreck began to murder other fellows for the supplies.

A mutiny led by Jeronimus Cornelisz had led to the murder of more than 100 castaways, including 12 women and 7 children. As Sardam approached, a boat put out to warn Pelsaert that Cornelisz intended to seize his ship and sail away without the other survivors. The Batavia shipwreck was found in April of 1840 by Captain Strokes who was responsible for identification of beams of a large vessel.

In the period 1970 through to 1974, under the leadership of maritime archaeologist Jeremy Green of the Western Australian Museum, some of the cannon from the Batavia wreck, an anchor, and many artefacts were salvaged, including timbers from the port side of the ship's stern.

In order to facilitate the monitoring and any future treatment, the hull timbers were erected on a steel frame designed and erected by Geoff Kimpton, a member of Green's staff.

A replica of the Batavia ship model was built at the Bataviawerf (Batavia Wharf) in Lelystad in the Netherlands. Please browse our website or contact us to help you find the perfect model ship for your collection.

Title: Batavia Platinum

This letter is to serve as notice of my Company's appreciation of the work carried out by Premier Ship Models Ltd regarding the design, construction and delivery of five model ships for a project Rich Creation International Ltd has to fit out the currently 'in-progress' installation of Hong Kong's first full Maritime Museum.

We first commissioned Premier Ship Models in early 2004 for a very urgent delivery on custom making model ships of the Batavia and San Felipe Galleons. This then increased to additional orders of a further two model ships of the Borobodur and Perahu vessels and lastly, late in 2004, a Singalese model sailing boat.

The entire project continued to undergo many design changes and even resulted in the change of size/scale of the Batavia. All accommodated without problem by Premier Ship Models. They worked very professionally and did significant research on the later commissioned model ships as our client had little information.

Constant delays and our clients change of mind on needs, finishes, ageing of the ship models etc added complexities to already difficult tasks, but in the end we received on time excellent ship models, highly detailed and fine finishing. The shipping and packing was excellent, and all 5 model ships received after a near 3 week journey by sea were without damage.

We found Rashid and his staffs service to be very helpful, timely and professional in every respect. We will and hope to use them again on other projects and further commissions for this Museum as it expands and creates new displays. The general quality, service and reliabilty has proved its worth in using them over less expensive options, but in saying that we still find them to be highly competitive and value for money. We would recommend them to any other prospective client for the provision of high quality Maritime model ships.

Best regards,
By (U .A.E Client October 2006). on
Title: Batavia model ship
Text: Now that the model of the Batavia is on its way to Sharjah, I would like to thank you for the very thorough, friendly and professional manner in which you managed the project at your end. As you know, we faced an incredibly tight initial programme. We also faced difficulties in sourcing drawings and other building information.  Added to this, your model makers were being asked to produce a model to a much higher standard than their previous ones. Thankfully, everyone at Model-Ships rose to these challengers magnificently. As a result, we now have a very impressive 'musuem quality' model, which I am sure will greatly impress the client - His Royal Highnedd, the Ruler of Sharjah.
It has been a pleasure to have worked closely with you on this project. I would be grateful if you could pass on my thanks and congratulations to your colleague. They have performed splendidly!
With all best wishes
